Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

at Recovery Inside Out

Experience Rapid, Lasting Relief

At Recovery Inside Out, we understand that healing from trauma and emotional distress shouldn't be a prolonged process. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is designed to tackle issues like trauma and anxiety in just one or two sessions, without the need for lengthy discussions about what is bringing you to therapy. Our skilled therapists guide you through this transformative process, helping you reclaim peace and control over your life.

Is This You?

You’re ready for something to shift. You’ve done the work—or you’ve tried—but the steady rhythm of weekly therapy isn’t cutting it right now. You’re not against therapy (you may even love your therapist), but let’s be real: you’re craving relief. You want momentum. You want to move through the stuck places, not just talk about them week after week.

At Recovery Inside Out, we get it. Traditional therapy can be powerful—but sometimes, it's just not enough.

Maybe…

  • There’s a memory that sneaks up on you at the worst times, hijacking your peace and leaving you feeling overwhelmed or shut down.

  • You’ve been carrying something for way too long—anxiety, shame, grief, guilt—and it’s draining the life out of you.

  • You’re in therapy already and have a strong connection with your therapist, but there’s one issue that just won’t budge, no matter how much you process it.

  • You’re not new to healing—but this time, you want something that works deeper and faster.

You're not alone. Many of the folks we work with come to us looking for real movement and real results—without having to wait months or years to get there.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is built for exactly that.

What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a unique, evidence-based approach to healing that helps you move through distressing memories and emotional stuck points—fast. It’s not about endlessly revisiting the past or talking something to death. With ART, you don’t have to explain every detail of what happened. You just need to be ready for something to shift.

Here’s how it works:
ART uses a combination of eye movements, imagery, and other techniques to help your brain reprocess the way distressing experiences are stored—without having to relive them. With the guidance of a trained therapist, you’re able to replace the negative images and sensations tied to painful memories with more positive ones of your own choosing. Once that happens, the emotional charge—those triggers, intrusive thoughts, or nightmares—often disappears.

What makes ART different is how quickly it works. Many people experience significant relief in just one session. And because it integrates pieces of proven therapies like Gestalt, psychodynamic work, and guided imagery, it taps into your system’s natural ability to heal—without dragging the process out.

How ART Works

ART employs a structured protocol involving:

  1. Imaginal Exposure: Safely recalling distressing memories.

  2. Bilateral Eye Movements: Engaging in therapist-guided eye movements to process memories.

  3. Voluntary Image Replacement: Substituting negative images with positive ones of your choosing.

  4. Cognitive Restructuring: Reframing negative beliefs associated with traumatic memories.

This process helps reprogram how distressing memories are stored in the brain, reducing their emotional impact while preserving the factual content.

What to Expect During an ART Session

Each ART session is a collaborative process between you and your therapist, typically lasting 60-90 minutes. Here's what you can anticipate:

  • Assessment: Identifying the specific issue or memory to address.

  • Processing: Engaging in eye movements while recalling the distressing memory.

  • Image Replacement: Visualizing positive images to replace the negative ones.

  • Integration: Discussing the experience and reinforcing the new, positive imagery.

Notably, ART does not require you to discuss the details of your trauma, making it a less invasive option for many clients.

  • ART sessions usually last 60 to 90 minutes, depending on what you're working on and what your nervous system can handle that day. Our therapists will walk with you to figure out the pace that fits—not just what you're carrying, but also how you're wired. It’s about working smarter, not longer.

  • Nope—but we get why people ask.

ART and EMDR both use eye movements and help folks process trauma, but they do it in different ways. EMDR focuses on helping you desensitize and reprocess memories. ART, on the other hand, is more structured, more visual, and often faster. It helps you replace distressing images with ones that feel safe, peaceful, or empowering—and you don’t even have to talk about every detail of your trauma out loud.

Both are effective. The best choice? The one that works for you.

  • Absolutely. In fact, that’s how many people use it. ART can be a standalone treatment, or it can be added in to support what you're already doing in therapy. We collaborate with your existing therapist if that’s helpful—we’re not here to replace the work, we’re here to amplify it.

  • That’s great—we love that. You don’t have to choose between your therapist and us. We’re happy to work in tandem with your existing therapist to support you through a specific issue or stuck point. Think of us like a targeted boost, not a full handoff.

  • Yes. ART is recognized as an evidence-based treatment by the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12 of the American Psychological Association). The research continues to grow, and the outcomes speak for themselves.

  • Yes—and it’s important we name those with care and honesty.

ART is powerful, but like all therapeutic tools, it’s not the right fit for everyone. There are a few situations where ART may not be appropriate or effective, including:

We’ll never push you into a modality that isn’t right for your nervous system or your readiness. If ART doesn’t feel like a fit, we’ve got other approaches—and we’ll figure it out together. The goal isn’t just doing ART. The goal is healing, and we’re committed to helping you find the path that gets you there.
